In reply to <a href="http://michaelbgreen.com.au/soil-preparation/#comment-1696">adam</a>.

Hi Adam,
The guys from Very Edible Gardens are great on soil. They run occasional workshops which might give you some of the information you need. Soil tests would be very interesting, but I think they might cost upwards of $100, depending on what you want to test for. Otherwise, there are some basic soil tests you can do simply, which you could find online with a little searching, and then do with your class. In one, using a glass jar and some water, you can determine the kind of soil you have – clay, loam, etc. And you can test the pH with a simple kit too. Good luck! It's a great topic. It's also the UN International Year of Soil, so there might be some information you can draw from the website they've put together...

Hi
I am currently working with a group of students from the Melbourne Montessori School in Brighton (Vic) preparing garden beds to grow food. I try to continually emphasise the importance of healthy soil and thought it would be a great exercise to have our soil tested and explained prior to planting.
I want to explain to the students (year 7):
1. exactly what is soil?
2. what are the basic ingredients of soil
3. what level of ingredients is right for planting
4. what ingredients & levels do we have?
etc etc

Would you be able to offer any assistance?

kind regards
