 You should have used the correct contempoary expression “kilometrage”.

 

Imperial is used by only one “advanced” country – you guessed it – The Violent States of America EXCEPT, just to be contrary as crankyanker culture insists, they have a VSA gallon which is even different to imperial.  Oz isn’t the 51st state (someone last week said Canada is – a real pity!!) so be a sedulous leader, NOT an indolent follower.  Use contemporary measurement and not archaic, illogical imperial used by only the slothful in our society.  By doing this you will pay proper respect to the sedulous like I am, our kids (I’ve never yet met a teenager or a young adult who understands imperial & I ask them frequently) and New Ozzies from metric countries.

  

Incidentally the correct term for a plot of land in hectares is HECTARAGE (Australian Oxford English Dictionary 2004 Ed – ANU).  It’s not in the Oz edition of the VSA Websters Dictionary (Macquarie Dictionary) nor is kilometrage, litreage, metreage and so on.  I suppose Macquarie is awaiting the latest instructions from crankyankerland.

I’ll have a look into the date thing, but I’m using a template website so I don’t know if I can change it. As for the mileage, I think the meaning is more easily understood as is. I appreciate your outrage for kilometrage, but I’m sticking with the old term.

Chicken!  Be a Leader not a follower.  From a metrics point of view we already have too many followers mostly, it seems, in the ranks of Farmers, Real Estate Agents and Machinery Salesmen.  Remember anyone in ther 80s today was only in their 40s when we legislated the Metric Conversion Act 1970.  At 31yo (42 years ago) my mental agility coped easily wth the change. The only reason “mileage is better understood” is because people in the public face are not honouring to teach as well as inform and the sloths are influencing our younger citizens.  Go on – change – I dare you!

Trevor, I appreciate your zeal, but for me there are many, many more important issues than the semantics of mileage and kilometrage!
