I conduct oral history interviews for individuals, families, organisations and institutions.
Oral history recording is a way of preserving voices and stories that might otherwise be lost—a family elder’s memories, a community’s experience of a significant event, an organisation’s institutional knowledge. A recorded interview, conducted well, becomes a lasting document that can be listened to, transcribed, archived and shared.
I bring to this work the same values that have shaped my journalism and documentary practice: close attention, genuine curiosity and a belief that the person being interviewed is the authority on their own experience. I am an oral history interviewer for the National Library of Australia and a coordinator of Behind the Wire, an award-winning oral history project about Australian immigration detention.
